If left untreated, you could potentially lose the tooth, or the infection could get into your bloodstream and spread to other parts of your body. When you go into the dentist to have the tooth looked at, they are going to be able to see what the cause of the pain is, and can immediately perform what is necessary, whether this is to give you antibiotics for the infection, perform an emergency root canal, or whatever else is necessary.
